Ocrolus Now Includes Its Detect Fraud Checks for All Mortgage Customers

Ocrolus on Monday, Oct. 12, announced that every Ocrolus mortgage customer now gets Ocrolus Detect, its document fraud detection product, at no added cost. Detect checks bank statements, pay stubs and tax forms for signs of tampering.

Why this matters: Generative AI makes fake income and asset documents faster to produce. For lenders, one altered document can lead to a loan repurchase demand. For honest borrowers, more automated screening can mean more questions about documents that look unusual.

What Detect does

According to Ocrolus, Detect gives each document an authenticity score with reason codes, such as edited text, balances that do not reconcile, or changes made after the file was created. Through an integration with Resistant AI, it also looks for documents that were created or edited with generative AI. Underwriters see the results in the Ocrolus platform or in an embedded viewer inside the Encompass loan origination system.

Ocrolus stresses that Detect flags documents and explains why; the underwriter makes the decision.

What "no added cost" covers

The release says Detect is included for every Ocrolus mortgage customer. It does not say Detect is free for non-customers or for non-mortgage lending, and it does not describe changes to base pricing or volume limits. Lenders should confirm with Ocrolus how the inclusion appears in their contracts.

Reading the numbers

Ocrolus says that across all lending types, 12% of loan applications processed through Ocrolus contain suspicious activity. That figure comes from Ocrolus' own customer base and its definition of suspicious activity. It is not an independent industry-wide fraud rate, and suspicious does not mean confirmed fraud.

The company also cites a customer: JMAC Lending, a wholesale lender in Costa Mesa, California, which Ocrolus says screens every file in its Encompass pipeline with Detect and stopped nearly $2 million in fraudulent loan volume in its first months of use. In one example, Ocrolus says, a bank statement showed a $300,000 deposit in an account that held $1,200. These are company-reported results.

Ocrolus also said 40 lenders signed up for its Ocrolus Inspect product in the past 90 days, and that it maps its AI controls to Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's AI governance requirements.

Practical takeaway

For lenders: included screening is useful, but write down how underwriters handle flags, including how a borrower can explain or replace a flagged document.

For borrowers: send original PDFs downloaded from your bank or payroll provider, not edited, combined or screenshot files. Clean originals are less likely to trigger questions and delays.
