UWM Launches Mortgage Matchup ChatGPT Plugin to Connect Borrowers With Independent Mortgage Brokers
United Wholesale Mortgage is bringing its consumer-facing Mortgage Matchup platform into ChatGPT, giving borrowers another way to find independent mortgage brokers and access home-financing tools without leaving an AI conversation.
UWM announced the Mortgage Matchup plugin on Aug. 25, 2026. The company said the integration is available through ChatGPT on the web and mobile app and is designed to help consumers search for mortgage loan originators, estimate home affordability and use mortgage calculators and educational resources.
The move gives UWM a new distribution channel for Mortgage Matchup while potentially putting independent mortgage brokers in front of consumers earlier in the home-search and financing process — including when borrowers are increasingly turning to generative AI for answers.
How the Mortgage Matchup ChatGPT plugin works
According to UWM, users can begin a prompt with “Mortgage Matchup,” which can cause ChatGPT to surface the plugin during the conversation. First-time users are prompted to connect the integration and are shown information about what data may be shared.
From there, consumers can search for loan originators based on location and characteristics such as:
Loan-product specialties
Bilingual capabilities
Client reviews
Other expertise listed on a Mortgage Matchup profile
The integration also provides access to affordability calculations, mortgage calculators, explanations of common mortgage terminology and educational articles, UWM said.
Loan originators who already have a Mortgage Matchup profile are eligible to appear through the plugin. UWM said the information shown can include the originator's photo, contact details, website, social media links and professional biography.
That makes the ChatGPT integration less of a new mortgage marketplace than a new interface for UWM's existing consumer-discovery platform.
Why the ChatGPT launch matters for mortgage brokers
Mortgage Matchup's central purpose is to connect consumers with loan originators working at independent mortgage brokerages. UWM initially launched the underlying broker-search platform as FindAMortgageBroker.com in 2018 and rebranded it as Mortgage Matchup in January 2024.
The ChatGPT integration expands that strategy into a conversational environment where a prospective borrower may already be asking questions about affordability, mortgage products or the homebuying process.
Instead of requiring consumers to independently navigate to MortgageMatchup.com and conduct a broker search, the plugin creates an opportunity for that discovery process to occur within ChatGPT.
“Consumers expect instant access to any and all information, the mortgage industry should be no different,” UWM Chief Marketing Officer Sarah DeCiantis said in announcing the launch.
For brokers, the potential value is visibility. A more complete Mortgage Matchup profile — including specialties, licensing information, biography and other relevant details — may give consumers more information to consider when comparing originators through the platform.
UWM has separately told its broker partners that Mortgage Matchup is designed to help homebuyers and real estate agents find independent mortgage professionals, and its broker resources encourage loan originators to keep their listings complete and current.
UWM is extending its AI strategy beyond the loan-production workflow
The Mortgage Matchup launch also differs from many of UWM's previous artificial-intelligence initiatives because it is aimed directly at consumer discovery rather than primarily at improving brokers' internal workflows.
On Aug. 12, UWM announced a major redesign of ChatUWM, its AI platform for broker partners. The updated system combines functions including document analysis, mortgage-industry knowledge searches, pipeline information, internet searches and marketing-content generation within a single conversational interface.
UWM has also developed Mia, an AI-powered loan officer assistant designed to handle borrower communications such as inbound and outbound calls, questions, messages and appointment scheduling.
Mortgage Matchup moves the company's AI strategy further upstream: toward the point where a consumer is looking for information and deciding whom to contact.
The rollout comes as UWM continues to operate at significant scale. The lender reported $39.7 billion in mortgage originations during the second quarter of 2026, including $23.8 billion in purchase volume and $15.9 billion in refinance volume.
Mortgage Matchup remains a broker-discovery platform
There is an important distinction for consumers: Mortgage Matchup is powered by UWM, but the loan originators displayed on the platform work for mortgage brokerages rather than functioning as UWM retail loan officers.
Mortgage Matchup's own disclosure says the featured loan originators and mortgage brokers act as intermediaries that arrange financing through third-party lenders. Those brokerages may maintain relationships with multiple lenders, which can include UWM.
That structure is consistent with UWM's wholesale-only model. Rather than using ChatGPT to build a traditional direct-to-consumer retail mortgage channel, the company is using the integration to direct consumers toward independent brokers.
Mortgage Matchup also provides educational tools and calculators, but its terms state that information on the site is provided for informational purposes and should be verified before a consumer relies on it.
ChatGPT's plugin ecosystem creates a new mortgage-discovery channel
The timing also aligns with changes to ChatGPT itself.
OpenAI said that as of July 9, 2026, it shifted its app directory to a Plugin Directory, making plugins the primary mechanism for discovering packaged third-party capabilities across ChatGPT and Codex. Plugins can include apps that connect ChatGPT with external information and services, subject to availability, permissions and connection requirements.
UWM's launch therefore puts Mortgage Matchup inside a newly emphasized ChatGPT distribution channel at a time when financial-services companies are exploring how conversational AI can influence consumer research and product discovery.
Mortgage Matchup already has a broader consumer-marketing footprint. In 2024, UWM made the brand the official mortgage partner of the NBA and WNBA as part of a multiyear U.S. partnership intended to expand awareness of independent mortgage brokers.
The ChatGPT plugin extends the same strategy into AI-driven search.
The longer-term question will be whether consumers use conversational AI merely to research mortgages or increasingly use it to decide which mortgage professional to contact. For UWM and its broker network, Mortgage Matchup's ChatGPT presence is a bet that those two activities will increasingly happen in the same conversation.
